Life Story for Ada M. Yarnall

Ada M. Yarnall
Ada Marie Yarnall, age 90, of Darlington, MD died Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the Citizens Care Center in Havre De Grace, MD. Miss Yarnall was born January 28, 1923 in Warwick, Orange County, New York. She was the third child and second daughter of the late Walter R. and Augusta E. Yarnall. Her father was born 1884 in Ohio and her mother was born 1891 in Germany.

In addition to her parents, Ada was preceded in death by her brother, Merritt Yarnall, and sister, Betty Yarnall Happel. Upon graduating high school from the Warwick Institute, Warwick, New York in 1940, Miss Yarnall enrolled in the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, Newark, New Jersey and received her diploma in 1945. She was certified to practice as a Registered Nurse by the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Nurses in 1945. In 1946 she was also licensed to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of New York. Ada graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Hunter College of The City University of New York in 1949. She later studied at the University of Paris and received her diploma in 1958. Miss Yarnall was appointed to military service in 1952 for an indefinite term of service.

Roots were established in Maryland while serving as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Bainbridge. USNTC served the United States during war and peace time from 1942 until 1976. Lieutenant Ada Yarnall was honorably discharged from active duty in 1957 and accepted a higher command to “Go ye into all the world” and became a missionary to Africa. Her training as a Navy nurse prepared her well to work on the mission field for nearly two decades. In 1957, she found herself at work in a grass-roofed dispensary hut, caring for the sick people of Africa. She received further training in care of special eye conditions and was able to operate in those particular cases. The mission where she served also cared for babies who were orphaned. Ada later returned to her friends and church family in Harford County and joined the faculty of Harford Christian School where she served a number of years as teacher and School Nurse.

In more recent years she continued a life of service as a visiting nurse and friend to the sick and elderly in hospitals or confined to their homes. Miss Yarnall is survived by two nieces, Judith Happel Ikner, Mobile, Alabama, Barbara Happel Smith, Peoria, Illinois, a nephew, David Happel, Omaha Nebraska, and a host of friends and church family at the Reformation Bible Church, Darlington, MD.

A memorial service, honoring her life, is scheduled for 6:00 pm Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Church located at 1736 Whiteford Road, Darlington, MD. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 14th, 2013 at 11:30 am at the Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, 11501 Garrison Forest Road, Owings Mills, MD.
