Life Story for Donald Smith Hoke

Donald Smith  Hoke
Donald Smith Hoke, age 85 years of West Chester, PA, died Monday, July 21, 2014 at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania. He was the husband of Barbara W. Hoke. Born in York, Pa, he was the son of the late William and Helen (Smith) Hoke. Don graduated from York High School and attended Ursinus College and Stonier School of Banking. He joined the Army and served in Korea and Germany from 1951-1953.

Upon returning to civilian life, Don pursued a career in the banking trust departments in York, Harrisburg and Kennett Square, retiring from Meridian bank in 1987.

Donald volunteered with the Red Cross and the Boy Scouts, which sparked an interest in local history, especially, the Revolutionary War. He became an interpreter and tour guide at the Brandywine Battlefield. Don enjoyed planning trips with the YAG Club and taking family vacations, both winter and summer.

In addition to his wife, Don is survived by four children-
Steve Hoke of Horsham, PA
Brian Hoke of Union Springs, NY
Susan Courtney of Clifton, VA
Laurie Downs of Greenwich, CT.

Seven grandchildren-Brittany Rudershausen, Melissa and Jamie Hoke, Drew and Austin Courtney and Carly and Kevin Downs.

Parker Rudershausen, son of Dan and Brittany is his great-grandchild.

A sister-in-law, Jean Hoke of Ephrata, PA

He was pre-deceased in death by his sister Janet Reiff and his brother, William F Hoke.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 130 West Miner Street, West Chester, Pa 19382.

Prior to that, a private graveside service will be held at Slate Ridge Cemetery in Delta, Pa with military honors presented by the Pennsylvania National Guard Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate memorial contributions to First Presbyterian Church at the above address.
