Life Story for Elsie May Burkins

Elsie May  Burkins
ELSIE MAY BURKINS, age 84 of Delta, died in her home on Monday, January 5, 2014. She was the wife of the late Marshall D. “Jake” Burkins, Sr. who died on October 3, 2011.

Born on May 5, 1930 in Bridgeton, PA, Elsie was the eldest daughter of William Francis and Lida Alberta (Bryson) Jones. Elsie grew up on the family farm loving animals, especially cats. She graduated from the former Delta High School in 1948 and retired from working at Kennard-Dale High School as a custodian. She was a marvelous seamstress and had worked at the former D & D Sewing Factory of Delta and for the former Petti-Frocks that was located in Whiteford, MD. She enjoyed sewing for her family, cooking, gardening and working puzzles.

She is survived by:
Three children-
James M. Burkins and his wife, Sandra of Delta. Sandra had been Elsie’s caregiver.

Marshall D. Burkins, Jr. and his wife, Lisa of Delta
Grandson, Steven Burkins of Delta, and great grandson, Bentlee.

Jean Grafton and her husband, Charles of Windsor, PA
Grandson, William Grafton and his wife, Lauren and great grandson, Brodee of York, PA.

She was preceded in death by her only sibling, Evelyn Mary Yale who lived in North Carolina prior to her death.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, PA where the funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Interment will be in Slate Ridge Cemetery, Delta.

Her minister, Pastor Beth R. Holz will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Delta U.M.C., PO Box 445, Delta, PA 17314 or Animal Rescue, Inc., 2 Heritage Farm Drive, New Freedom, PA 17349.
