Life Story for Catherine A. Kunkel

CATHERINE A. KUNKEL, 96 years of Pylesville, MD, passed on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. She was the wife of Anthony H. Kunkel, Jr., who on September 18, 1987 preceded her in death.

Born on May 19, 1918 in Burgettstown, PA, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Victoria (Rizotto) Povero. A graduate of the former Union High School in Burgettstown, Mrs. Kunkel was recognized as the Valedictorian of her class. In 1938, she and Anthony were married, and they embarked on a remarkable experience traveling wherever his job as a metallurgical engineer would take them. Beginning with 17 years in Peru, the couple then traveled to Rye, NY, the State of Maryland, 3 years in New Brunswick, Canada, concluding his career after 5 years in Los Angeles when he retired in the late 1970’s.

Following a time of residing in Peach Bottom, PA, in 1999 Mrs. Kunkel moved to live in the St. Mary’s Rectory where her son serves as parish priest. Mrs. Kunkel enjoyed cooking, reading and playing bridge.

She is survived by:
Her son, The Reverend A. Henry Kunkel, III, pastor of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Pylesville, MD

Her daughter, C. Karen Ahlstrom and her husband, Richard of Rosedale, MD.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances Zadro and Mary Romito.

Visitations will be held on Friday, January 23rd from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 1021 St. Mary’s Road, Pylesville, MD 21132.

A prayer service, led by Deacon Phillip Seneschal. will be held on Friday evening at 8:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, the 24th at 10 a.m. at the church with interment in the adjoining church cemetery.

Her son, Father Kunkel will be the celebrant with Deacon Gary Dumer presenting the sermon.

In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate memorial contributions to the St. Mary’s Capital Campaign at the address previously listed for the parish.
