ERNA MAXINE "VAN HART" SMITH, age 70 years, of Delta, Pennsylvania died on Thursday, September 28, 2006 at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania.
Maxine was born on November 4, 1935 in Delta; a daughter of Emeleyn S. Van Hart of Delta and the late Maude Marie (Wayne) Van Hart. Graduating in 1953, she was a member of the first graduating class of Kennard Dale High School in Fawn Grove, Pennsylvania. She continued her education graduating from York College of Nursing in 1956. She married and traveled as a military wife working as a registered nurse at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, Maryland and then in various hospitals in many states. She was head nurse during her career at Tillamook General Hospital in Oregon.
Maxine was a very loving mother and devoted daughter living with her parents to care for them until her mother’s death in 1997. She then continued to care for her father. She loved bowling with fellow friends from the Delta Senior Center, gardening, flower arranging and cooking. Her passion in life was to make her friends and family feel special.

Kimberly K. Smith of San Antonio, Texas and currently serving with the United States Army Nurse Corp in Iraq.
Life long friend and sister-Barbara Miller of Cardiff, Maryland
Former husband-Jack C. Smith of Sun City, Arizona

She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Mae Johnson on June 4, 2006.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, Pennsylvania. Visitation will be held from noon -2:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend James B. Shuler of Pine Grove, Presbyterian Church, Airville, Pennsylvania officiating.
Interment will be in the Slateville Cemetery, Delta, Pennsylvania.
Pallbearers will be Steve Miller, Thomas Edwin “Chip” Johnson, Keel Johnson, Henry Dehoff, Calvin Jones and Randy Cohenour.
