Obituary for Alice Marie Dowell

LIFE STORY PREPARED BY HER LOVING FAMILY: Alice Marie Dowell (née Boyd), 78, of Darlington, Maryland entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 on the 28th anniversary of the passing of her beloved mother. She was born in Tazewell, Virginia on November 13, 1943 to the late Sherman and Clara Beatrice Boyd (née Graham), of Fawn Grove, PA.

Alice had a humble upbringing in a home that modeled Christian love. Her father worked in the coal mines of southern Virginia and she would often say that she was proud to be a “coal miner’s daughter”, singing the like-named song at countless cheerful family gatherings spanning several decades.

For the past 60 years, she had been the loving and devoted wife of Wilburn (Ivan) Dowell of Darlington, Maryland, by whom she is survived. Ivan and Alice’s home was always full of food, hospitality, and love. They have always enjoyed opening their home to their sisters, brothers, nephews, nieces, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. By her grandchildren, (and countless others) Alice was affectionately known as “Nanny”.

Along with her husband, she is survived by 3 sons: Brian Dowell and his wife, Sherry, of Whiteford, Maryland; Barry Dowell and his wife, Dana, of Whiteford, Maryland; and Kent Dowell and his wife, Angel, of Darlington, Maryland. Five grand-children Nicholas Dowell (Alicia), Matthew Dowell (Heather), Miranda Denman (Sean), Madison Dowell and Jacob Dowell. She was recently blessed with the addition of 4 great grand-children: Wyatt, Caleb, Hudson and Macy. She is also survived by her brother, George Edward Boyd and his wife Lucy of Fawn Grove, PA. A sister Pattie Blanche Lloyd and her husband Norman of York New Salem, PA. She was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph Boyd and Herschel Boyd.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, 3414 Cedar Church Road, Darlington, MD. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 31, 2022 at 11 a.m. at the church with Alice’s nephew, Pastor Jimmy Mullins of New Harvest Church of God officiating. Burial will immediately follow the funeral in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, MD.
