ELIZABETH LOU JOHNSON, 90 years of Smithburg, MD, formerly of Bel Air, MD passed away on Friday, May 6, 2022 in the Williamsport Retirement Village of Williamsport, MD.
Born on July 20, 1931 in Olivia, MN, she was one of three children of the late Eryck Matzke and Odella (Wetter) Matzke and the wife for 56 years of Arthur H. Johnson, Sr. who died on September 2, 2010. Elizabeth had served as the manager of Arlington Hospital in Arlington, MN prior to her marriage. She later worked 17 years as the manager for several senior housing facilities through the Stuart Corporation. While living in Minnesota, she worshipped at Coleraine United Methodist Church where she had been active in church activities.
In 2002, she moved with her husband to Maryland to be near their son, Pastor Jim Johnson and his family. She attended Dublin United Methodist Church where her son was the church minister. While in Harford County, she lived in Harford Senior Housing. In 2016, her son was transferred to Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville, MD and she moved with them living in Smithburg.
Elizabeth was very talented at counted cross stitch and created exceptional pieces of art. Many members of her family will always cherish these gifts that she created. Strong in her faith, she will be remembered for her kind spirit and caring nature.
She is survived by:
Three sons-Arthur H. Johnson, Jr.; David G. Johnson and Pastor James Johnson.
Seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brothers-Daniel and Milford Matzke.
Private services will be held for Elizabeth with the interment of her cremated remains in Arlington National Cemetery with her late husband.
