Obituary for Grace Louise McDaniel

GRACE LOUISE MCDANIEL, 89 of Darlington, MD, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023 in the Senator Bob Hooper House of Forest Hill, MD. She was the loving wife for 55 years of the late James Wallace McDaniel who died in January 2006.

Born on August 3, 1933 in Harford County, MD, she was a daughter of the late Earl W. Williams and Mary Virginia Grover Williams. Grace was the beloved mother of three children, devoted grandmother of seven, cherished great grandmother for sixteen and adoring great-great grandmother of seven precious ones.

Grace was known as a kind and caring woman fitting easily in the McDaniel Family of Harford County upon her marriage to Jim. She enjoyed baking sweets and working in the original Blue Bell Restaurant (owned by her in-laws) and transitioning into the restaurant she and her late husband owned and operated, Blue Bell, Jr. in Darlington. She brought her smile and love of cooking for others at the restaurant that was a well-known favorite especially for seafood. However, her signature dish and that of the McDaniel family members were the crab cakes! People would travel from all over just to enjoy them. Grace enjoyed visiting with family and friends, planting flowers and painting figurines for her yard. She had a love to go to the casinos where she could be found trying her luck with the slot machines. Another familiar face in the Ballpark Restaurant, she thoroughly enjoyed their codfish dinner.

In their younger years, the McDaniel couple enjoyed dancing and was known to be quite proficient in the jitterbug. She enjoyed fashion, jewelry and was known to “dress up” any chance she could. She was asked at her husband’s funeral services if she might share that secret McDaniel Family crab cake recipe to which she smiled and said, “No darling.” Her beautiful smile and kind spirit will be missed.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, daughter and two grandsons. Her family would appreciate memorial contributions to Upper Chesapeake Health Foundation, 520 Upper Chesapeake Drive, Suite 405, Bel Air, MD 21014 with a note in the memo line that the donation is in her memory and for the Hooper House.

Harkins Funeral Home has been entrusted with her arrangements. Services will be private at the request of her family.
