Obituary for Hugh Eugene "Gene" Jones

Hugh Eugene (Gene) Jones, 77, of Whiteford, MD, died at Broad Creek Manor Assisted Living on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. Hugh was born in Havre de Grace, MD, to the late Hugh and Jean (Sliver) Jones. He was married to the late Karen Sue Jones, who died in 2018.

Gene graduated from North Harford High School in 1962. He worked his professional life as a Security Trader for Alex Brown/Deutsche Bank, retiring after 32 years of service. Hugh was strong in his faith attending Cambria United Methodist Church in childhood then Highland Presbyterian Church when he and Karen moved to Highland. He remained an active member at Highland Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities including the cemetery committee.

Gene was very active in the community, whether at church or assisting with sports programs. He coached and played softball, began the indoor soccer program at North Harford High School and was a member of the Harford County Soccer Council. Gene was known as Coach or “Mr. Soccer” by many. A loving and caring man, he was nominated to be a Harford County Living Treasure in 2014. His list of memberships includes; The Mason Dixon Business Association, the Baltimore Security Traders Association, past President and Ambulance Chief of the Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company and the Whiteford/Cardiff/Pylesville/Street Community Council.

Hugh is survived by his son, Michael E. Jones, of Whiteford, MD and his daughter, Melissa (William) Woods, of Delta, PA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew and Cheyenne Klein, Mia and Zoe Jones, Billy and Zachary Woods. One brother, Charles (Terry) Jones of Rogersville, PA, survives Hugh also.

The family will receive friends and loved ones on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 from 2:00-4:00 pm and again from 6:00-8:00 pm at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, PA 17314. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Highland Presbyterian Church, 701 Highland Road, Street, MD 21154, with Revered Ray Meute officiating. Inurnment will immediately follow the memorial service at Highland Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to; Highland Presbyterian Church, at the above address, in care of the general fund.
