Obituary for John Lee Powers

John Lee Powers, age 80 years, of Delta, PA and formerly of Darlington, MD, died peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of Tuesday, February 2, 2021. He was the husband of Esther Mae (Stauffer) Powers, who died on November 15, 1993. Born in Fleetwood, NC on January 12, 1941, he was the youngest of eight children of the late Henry Harden and Vina Ann (Surber) Powers. At the age of six, his family moved to Harford County.
John began his career in retail while in high school, working for his brother, Bud, in his snack bar, Glen Echo, on Route 1 in Darlington. Following graduation from high school, John worked for his brother and sister, Bud and Ruby, in their restaurant, Woodside, in Cecil County, and this is where John met Esther, the love of his life. He then worked as a bookkeeper at Jones Motor Company in Conowingo, and then transitioned to Edgewood Arsenal, continuing his career in accounting. In the early 1960’s, John, along with his brothers, Bud and Harold, joined forces to own and operate Glen Echo Motel and Superette on Route 1 in Darlington. In the early 1980’s they sold the business, and John entered the banking industry, where he worked as a vice president and branch manager for BB&T in Street at the time of his retirement in 2004.
A kind man, he loved the Lord, his family and friends, and enjoyed working outside in his flower and vegetable gardens. Following his retirement and relocation to Delta, he also enjoyed his time spent with friends at the Delta Senior Center.
