June L. Atkin of Whiteford, MD, died on Monday, December 28, 2020, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. She was 90 years old. Born in Whiteford on July 4, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Marion (Bill Daniel) and Agnes (Heaps) Williams. Her husband of nearly 49 years, James E. Atkin, died in 2001.

Mrs. Atkin was a 1947 graduate of the former Slate Ridge School in Cardiff, MD, and a 1951 graduate of Washington College in Chestertown, MD. In February 1951, she began her long career as a teacher at the newly opened North Harford High School in Pylesville, MD. That career was later interrupted for several years, though, while she joined her army husband in Germany, where she substituted frequently at the American Dependents School in Aschaffenburg. She did return to teaching at her beloved North Harford, however, in 1956, where she continued uninterrupted until the spring of 1986. In the meantime, she had earned her MLA degree from Johns Hopkins University.

Immediate survivors include her son Michael of Delta, PA, her daughter Jayme Webster of Mercersburg, PA; her brother, James Zane Williams of Whiteford; granddaughters Sarah Vitellaro and her husband William of Clayton, NC and Grace Fear and her husband Jim of Mercersburg, PA. Her beloved great-grandchildren: Raffaello, Aliceanna, Fabian, Rose, Samuel Vitellaro and Kaitlyn, and Abigail Fear, also survive her. The families of Steve Greene (Anna) and Dawn Scarborough (Jeff), children of her deceased sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Dean Greene, are also very close, as is a step-grandson, Christian Purin.

Besides being a long-time member of the former Delta United Methodist Church, Mrs. Atkin attended the Bryansville United Methodist Church and was active in the Friends of the Harford County Library – Whiteford Branch – and the Madonna AARP. In 2003, Mrs. Atkin was awarded the honor of Harford County Living Treasure.

In summary, she loved her immediate family, her nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, and all those wonderful “kids” she had the pleasure to teach at North Harford.

Because of the current situation, public funeral services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory to The Harford County Public Library Foundation 1221-A Brass Mill Road, Belcamp, MD 21017 or https://hcplonline.org/foundation.php would be appreciated. Please specify donations be directed to the Whiteford library.
