Obituary for Richard Baker Lindley Hood

Richard Baker Lindley Hood, age 85 years of York, PA and formerly of Plymouth, MA died on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 9:12 pm at ManorCare Health Services-York North. He was the husband of Helen Arthur (Kilburn) Hood and they observed their 62nd. wedding anniversary on August 10, 2019.
Born in Baltimore, MD on August 25, 1934, he was a son of the late James Lindley and Edna (Miller) Hood. He graduated with the class of 1953 from North Harford High School in Pylesville, MD where he met the love of his life, Helen.
Dick attended Gettysburg College for one year and then entered the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany and served in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment where he learned land surveying. He arrived home in December 1956 and began working as a land surveyor in Towson, MD. After he and Helen were married in August of 1957, they spent their honeymoon in Plymouth, MA and liked it so much they returned the next year for vacation. Driving along, they happened to notice surveyors working and, as a joke, decided to stop and ask if there were any job openings. After some conversation, Dick was offered a job, much to his and Helen’s surprise. They returned home to think it over and decided to accept a two year commitment beginning in October 1959. They ended up staying for 40 years and liked to say that their honeymoon lasted forever.
Along with a partner, Dick founded a survey company, “Hood and Stefani Surveyors, Inc.” He and Helen were active members of their church and served as Sunday School teachers, Youth Group advisors and on various committees. They were very active in the Plymouth Antiquarian Society and Dick helped with the local Boy Scout troop.
In 1963 they were blessed with a baby boy, and his musical talent was evident at an early age. Dick and Helen spent many evenings at music lessons and today their son is a music teacher, so they considered it time well spent.
He was a kind, gentle man and will be missed by many. Dick took pleasure in sharing his holiday train displays, especially with the children.
They moved back to the area in 1999 to a home in York, PA.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by;
One son: Richard Baker Lindley Hood, Jr. and his wife, Paulette of Hollywood, MD
One granddaughter: Paige Lindley Hood
He was preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis (Bill) Grimes.
