Obituary for Roseanna Elizabeth Payne

Life story written by her family - Roseanna Elizabeth Payne lived a full and meaningful life of 90 years. Born on August 22, 1932, she lived through many historic events and faced numerous challenges, but through it all she remained strong, determined and unwavering in her love for her family.

Ella Fitzgerald said, “It’s not where you came from, it’s where you are going that counts.” Born into meager means, Roseanna was a “self-starter” with ambition and inspiration to push through adversity, working in a laundry from the age of 13, a failed early marriage and single parent working as a waitress, her 2nd husband’s life-changing accident and her loving care for her friend, Lewis with end of life care that she provided. Through it all, she was selfless, generous and kind as well as altruistic in her actions.

Roseanna was a role model on how to live “a good life,” a fulfilling life – one full of love and meaning. Although she became unable to walk from successive physical falls, she continued to share her love with friends, caregivers, family and anyone she encountered.

Victor Hugo said, “Life is a flower of which love is the honey.” Roseanna fit into that flower, and she spread the honey. She had confidence and trust in herself, was unpretentious and lived frugal.

Roseanna didn’t measure herself by material accumulation, but by the things she freely gave away—love, seeing the best in others, being a loving, trusting, reliable friend and loyal partner. She always encouraged everyone to leave things better than you found them.

The end of a beautiful life will be remembered by her love and acceptance, loyal friendship, devotion to her family, her sincerity, kind soul and her faith in Almighty God. Roseanna loved angels and believed God’s angels watched over us always. She loved animals- especially her beloved pets. She loved to cook and could set a feast for many people in very short order.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her and her legacy of love, kindness and selflessness will continue to inspire us all.

Roseanna was blessed by her 2 children: Gene Raymond Smith, Jr. (Libin Huang) and Linda Sue Payne (August Raymond Martin) 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by her siblings: William E. Eiler, Alice Virginia Waugh and Herman Eiler.

In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate memorial contributions to St. Mary, Pylesville Catholic Parish, 1021 St. Mary’s Road, Pylesville, MD 21132 or Sunshine Acres, 4970 Jolly Acres Road, White Hall MD 21161.
