Obituary

Catherine Flodie (Davis) Short, of Whiteford, entered into rest peacefully at her home on the evening of Thursday, September 10, 2026, surrounded by her loving children. She was the wife of the late Richard Short, who died on December 13, 1998.

Catherine was born on June 22, 1927, in Onego, West Virginia, to the late Oscar Lee Davis and Flodie Ella (Thompson) Davis.

A loving and hardworking woman, Catherine found joy in caring for her home and family. She loved spending time in the kitchen, whether she was cooking, baking, or preserving what had been grown in her garden. Over the years, she canned just about everything, from peaches and vegetables to applesauce, preserves, jellies, and pickles. For Catherine, these were more than just everyday chores. They were some of the many ways she provided for the people she loved.

When she wasn't in the kitchen, Catherine could often be found outside working in her garden or tending to her flowers. Peonies and roses were her favorite. She also enjoyed crafting and especially loved planning family get-togethers and gatherings.

She leaves her children, Carolyn C. Doran and husband, David, Jean J. Warfield, Ronald R. Short and wife, Pamela, and Larry L. Short; her grandchildren, Jeff Elkins and wife, Sue, Dan Elkins and wife, Staci, Matthew Warfield and wife, Christina, Michael Doran and wife, Diane, Thomas Doran and wife, Jessica, Ronnie Short, and Chad Short; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren. Catherine was the last surviving of fourteen children. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Wally Warfield, and daughter-in-law, Robin L. (Ward) Short.

A viewing for Catherine will take place on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Wagner-Elfner and Harkins Funeral Home, Inc., 600 Main Street, Delta, and again on Friday, September 18, 2026, from 10 am to 11 am. A funeral service will begin at 11 am with Pastor Steve Smith of Lighthouse Church officiating. Burial will follow in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Short’s seven grandsons: Jeff, Dan, Matthew, Michael, Thomas, Ronnie, and Chad.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered in Catherine’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
