IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Darcy E.
Lloyd
March 19, 1917 – December 18, 2015
Darcy Elizabeth (McKee) Lloyd, 98, of Cardiff, MD., passed away peacefully at her home on Main Street in the early morning of Friday, Dec. 18, 2015. A life-long resident of Cardiff, and a seventh-generation inhabitant of northern Harford County, Mrs. Lloyd led a full and interesting life and will be fondly remembered by many.
Widowed since 1979 when her husband Allen B. "Bud" Lloyd died, Darcy remained surprisingly self-sufficient for someone who never once drove a car. Perhaps indicative of being one of the few of Scots-Irish heritage in a town enlivened by the families of Welsh quarrymen, or of being a New Deal Democrat who married into a family that was in her words "red-hot Republican," Mrs. Lloyd was as charming and generous as she was feisty and independent.
Born March 19, 1917 to Charles D. and Cora (Heaps) McKee, Darcy's father died of tuberculosis when she was two years old. Her father owned and operated the Pen Mar Theatre and adjoining restaurant in Cardiff at the time of his passing, when those responsibilities passed to her mother until the family later sold the building.
In her childhood, Darcy often saw her neighbor, Dr. William Arthur, making house calls via horse and buggy. Patients visiting his Main Street medical office could be examined and sent home with medication all for a fee of 75 cents.
Darcy attended Slate Ridge School from where she graduated at age 16 having skipped a grade along the way. Shortly thereafter she married Mr. Lloyd, a plastering contractor and semi-pro baseball player who also was from Cardiff.
A few years after marrying, Mrs. Lloyd inherited the McKee family home on Harford Avenue (now known as Dooley Road). She insisted that the home be sold so that she and her husband could purchase a home on Main Street because she wanted to be "where the action was." And so it was that Bud and Darcy raised their family in the Victorian style home where she lived for more than 70 years until her passing.
Although she never drove, Mrs. Lloyd led an active and social lifestyle. Dependent for transportation on family and friends, or her own two feet, or the Ma & Pa Railroad until it ceased passenger operations in the 1950s, she enjoyed attending community events, watching baseball games, playing Bingo, visiting acquaintances, and shopping in the "big cities" of York, PA. and Bel Air, MD. She worked for more than 20 years as an inspector at sewing factories in Cardiff, Whiteford, and York.
Aside from her family, the various activities and accomplishments of which she enjoyed discussing whenever the opportunity presented itself, Mrs. Lloyd's greatest affection was for her hometown. Darcy took great pride in the fact that at one time she could name every family that lived on either side of Main Street in not only Cardiff, but in the neighboring towns of Whiteford, MD. and Delta, PA. as well. With a wealth knowledge of the history of the community, she was honored as a Harford County Living Treasure in 2011 by the Harford County Council.
Mrs. Lloyd is survived by son Allen McKee "Mac" Lloyd and his wife Sandra of Churchville, MD., and daughters Beverly Haller and her husband Randall of DuBois, PA., and Jo Beth Janda of Forest Hill, MD.
In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as "Mimi": Kimberly (Haller) Butcher and Charles Lloyd Haller, both of Rochester, MI., Analisa (Janda) Archer of Ellicott City, MD., Stephen Thomas Janda of Springfield, VA., Benjamin Allen Lloyd II of Norrisville, MD., and Tyler McKee Lloyd of Bel Air, MD. She is also survived by four great-grandsons: Ryan Thomas Archer, Rhys McKee Lloyd, Coltyn William Lloyd, and Evan Fox Lloyd.
In addition to her mother, father, and husband, Mrs. Lloyd was predeceased by her step-father, Howard Fowler of Cardiff, sister Patricia (Fowler) Kilgore of Airville, PA., and son-in-law, Thomas P. Janda of Forest Hill, MD.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM with the funeral service to follow immediately thereafter at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, PA. Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. Kenneth Osborne of Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church and Rev. James B. Shuler, pastor of the Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, Airville. Interment in Slate Ridge Cemetery will follow the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Charles Haller, Stephen Janda, Benjamin Lloyd, Tyler Lloyd, Craig Kilgore, and Brett Kilgore.
In lieu of flowers and if so desired, donations in memory of Mrs. Darcy Lloyd can be made to Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1630 Chestnut Street, Cardiff, MD. 21160.
