IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Denny Michael
Hlaston
October 23, 1948 – November 27, 2025
Denny Michael Hlaston (Bubby) passed away at his home on the Eastern Shore of Maryland on Thursday, November 27, 2025. Born on October 23,1948, he was the son of the late Denny Hlaston and Lorraine Helen Hlaston (Hash) of Baltimore, Maryland.
He graduated from Patapsco Senior High School in 1966 and held an associate's degree in accounting from Catonsville Community College. He was an Army veteran and was proud of his service during the Vietnam War. He also supported the delivery of patient services at Saint Agnes (Ascension) Hospital as a Respiratory Care technician.
While he worked for various accounting firms, his greatest love was the game of golf.
He began his golf journey as a teenager working as a caddy at Sparrows Point Country Club. He later operated and managed multiple golf pro shops and as the computer world exploded, he helped develop a computer-based golf net system used throughout the United States.
He understood the science of golf course maintenance and planning and could speak at length on the lay of the land and the planting of grasses needed to support the game. He was always working on the "perfect putter".
He loved the comedy of Jonathan Winters and Johnny Carson. the music of the 60's (especially the Beatles), and the occasional "cold brew'.
He is survived by his twin sister Cheryl Haapala, who was constantly reminded by him that he was 6 minutes older, his sisters Sandra Kagle (George), and Anita Sokal (Bill) of Delta PA, and numerous cousins throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Denny never stopped learning and challenging himself to grow. He continued to study and develop his Spanish language skills, his love of organic gardening, and playing the guitar. He will be remembered as a quiet man with a quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor.
In his honor, the family is planning a springtime memorial service to be held at the Wagner-Elfner and Harkins Funeral Home in Delta PA. Final interment will be at Belair Memorial Gardens in Belair, Maryland. Details will follow on the Harkins website as Spring approaches.
