Donald D. McFadden, age 81 years, of Delta, PA died on Thursday, Oct. 21 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Betty M. (Workman) McFadden. They had been married for 58 years.
Mr. McFadden was born on August 10, 1929 in Delta, PA a son of the late David H. and Mary (Patterson) McFadden. He had been a member of Delta United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He retired in 1988 after 38 years at Aberdeen Proving Ground where he had worked at the Transportation Maintenance Activity, The Post Ordnance Supply, The Limited Warfare Laboratory and retired from the Ballistic Research Laboratories.
Donald enlisted in the Maryland National Guard, 29th Infantry Division while still in high school. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in 1957 after 10 years as an enlisted man. He served a total of 24 years in the National Guard and the Army Officers Reserve. He retired with the rank of Major. He was a member of Slate Ridge American Legion Post 182 and was a member of the Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Reserve Officers Assn., the 29th Infantry Division Assn and the National Assn of Retired Federal Employees.
He was a member and Past Master of Friendship Lodge # 663 Free & Accepted Masons, Fawn Grove, PA where he had also been the treasurer for the past 30 years. He was also affiliated with the Harrisburg Consistory, 32nd degree and the former Zembo Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Noble of the Mystic Shrine.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Debra M. Beard and her husband Garry of Delta, PA and a son David G. McFadden and his wife Sonia of York, PA.
2 grandchildren and their spouses- Jason L. and Katelyn Smith of Delta, PA and Rebekah M. and Joseph Backhaus of Fawn Grove, PA
2 great granddaughters- Emily Smith and Cassidy Backhaus.
Funeral service will be on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 PM at Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, 962 Flintville Road, Delta with the church minister, Pastor Dennis McCleary and Pastor Judy Walker of Delta UM Church officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation will be on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 6-8 PM at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main St., Delta, PA with a Masonic service at 7:30 PM
