DORIS B. CLAAR, age 96 years, of Baltimore, Maryland formerly of Delta, Pennsylvania died on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium, Maryland. She was the wife of the late Herbert Claar.
Mrs. Claar was born on September 13, 1911 in Erie, Pennsylvania; she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Julia (Crouch) Washburn. Mrs. Claar was raised on the family farm where she was introduced to the love of gardening and to appreciate the "Good Mother Earth." She lived in the River Hills area of Delta and at her warm weather home in Florida. She joined the Salem United Methodist Church in Delta and remained a member until her death. She was a devoted school teacher, specializing in reading education for over twenty five years. She was a talented painter and musician, a good listener in addition to always having time to help others.
Mrs. Claar had lived in Baltimore during her last years with good friends. She had a zest for life and was known to live her life as "I'd Rather Be Me."
She is survived by:
A son, Robert and his wife, Dorothy of Lavernia, Texas
Her very dear friends:
Adele B. Strummer and Reverend Dr. Vivian Zeeman, both of Baltimore, Maryland with whom she spent many years of her lifetime with.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 11 AM at Salem United Methodist Church, 5042 Delta Road, Delta, Pennsylvania. Interment of the urn will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
Reverend James B. Shuler of Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, Airville, Pennsylvania will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zarhar Remembrance Fund, Inc., (a fund established to aid continuation of education of the Holocaust) 1314 Highland Drive, Baltimore, MD 21239.
