IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy M.
Glackin
February 12, 1926 – June 27, 2024
DOROTHY LORINE MARVIN GLACKIN, 98 of Fawn Grove, PA, formerly of Cardiff, MD, died in the morning of Thursday, June 27, 2024 in Senior Commons, York, PA. Born on February 12, 1926 in Bloomingdale, NJ, she was the eldest of four daughters of the late Arthur Kenneth Marvin and Adelaide Augusta Luke Marvin, known as Peggy.
Dorothy graduated in 1943 from Pompton High School of Pompton Lakes, NJ and then continued her education receiving her B.A. Degree in Library Science in 1947 from the New Jersey College of Women of Rutger's University. Upon completion of her education, Dorothy took a train and journeyed to Harford County where she met the late Senator James and was interviewed for a job with the newly formed countywide Harford County Public Library System. Accepting the position, she began her career in the children's library section. Within 8 months of hire, she became the head librarian and continued to establish support for elementary and high school libraries. Dorothy was tasked with joining the libraries in the various towns within the county as well as establishing a library in Darlington. Furthermore, during her tenure as head librarian, she instituted First Fridays where guest speakers would come and address groups. Always willing to tackle a challenge, Dorothy worked to bring about the bookmobile adventure in a renovated work truck to hold racks of books until a "real" bookmobile was purchased to allow access to books in many of the communities of Harford County.
Dorothy met her late husband, Paul Louis Glackin who was a realtor with the "Ward & Bosley" firm, and they were married on April 8, 1951 in St. Mary Catholic Parish. Purchasing the McNabb House in Cardiff, MD, they welcomed their only child, Susan Lorine Glackin on January 8, 1958. At this time, she became a full time wife and mother. Paul established his own real estate business and later she opened her first bookstore in a barn behind his office. The store was actually in one of the old stalls thus becoming known as the "Book Stall." She soon out grew this space and opened a larger shop on the porch of Paul's office. Her love of books continued, and she was the first to hold book fairs in schools that is still a well-loved time in the lives of the countless students.
Dorothy served as a Girl Scout leader and when Susan was attending North Harford High School, established the American Field Service to host exchange students. The Glackin Family hosted Ursula, a student from Switzerland, during Susan's senior year. Dorothy was an original member of the Citizen's Nursing Home Board of Directors and faithfully served even helping evacuate patients in 1972 during Hurricane Agnes. Her love of the arts lead her to be involved in the establishment of the Phoenix Festival Theater at Harford Community College.
Her beloved husband, Paul died on November 29, 1979 at which time she became the broker for her husband's real estate company. To assist in this business, Susan and her husband, Mike obtained their license as well. Dorothy served on the Harford County Board of Realtors and was one of the core group that established Harford Hospice. She served as a volunteer for the hospice for many years and was one of the founding members of HOPE in Stewartstown, PA. Dorothy loved reading to children at Fawn Elementary School while living in the town for ten years. Dorothy served on the Board of Directors for Mason Dixon Community Services for many years and was named a Harford County Living Treasure in 2011. She was a longtime attendee of St. Mary Catholic Parish where she celebrated religious events with three generations of her family.
When Dorothy finally retired, she moved to Oakcrest Village in Parkville, MD, where she was very active with the Harford County Club for the residents formerly living in the county. She later moved back to Fawn Grove, PA to be near her family and could spend more time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dorothy was always supportive of their adventures and thoroughly cherished times with her nieces and nephews who came to visit. Later in life, she moved to Senior Commons in York, PA where she spent her final years.
Dorothy was a woman ahead of her time, solo driving the bookmobile, working as a real estate agent, establishing community opportunities such as the First Fridays, etc. She was never afraid to speak her mind, also a trait uncommon to women of her time, but her intentions were always to improve one's life, broaden the mind, love of books, the value of a good education and especially family values.
She is survived by:
Her daughter, Susan L. Miller and her husband, Michael of Fawn Grove, PA
Three grandchildren-Jared Miller (Morgan) and Paul Miller (Angela) all of Fawn Grove; Michelle Bonanno (Matthew) of Royersford, PA.
Seven grandchildren-Paige Miller of New Orleans; her sisters, Scarlett and Corinne; Levi and Rachel Miller; Bethany and Teresa Bonanno. Many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters: Joyce M. Abbott, Joan Miller and Dona Robinson.
