FLORA CORNELIA STREETT, Delta, Pennsylvania died on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at the age of 83.
She was born September 14, 1924 at "Clermont" (built by Colonel John Streett in 1805), Rocks (now Street), Harford County, Maryland.
She was the daughter of Mary Leona Pennington and Abraham Chester Streett, and granddaughter of Flora Mitchell and John Abraham Streett, and Irene Kent and John Pennington.
Street, the small agricultural community was named for her Father's family, receiving land patents in the early 1700's. Thomas Streett was a Signer of The Association of Freemen, and the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity to Maryland in 1776 and 1778.
Flora was a member of the Colonel John Streett Chapter DAR, named for her great-great-grandfather, Colonel John Streett, who commanded the Harford County Cavalry at the Battle of North Point in the War of 1812. He was an extensive planter, a successful business man, and was prominent in politics early in the 19th century, being elected twelve consecutive times to the Maryland Legislature.
Flora graduated from Delta High School, attended Drew University and Johns Hopkins University, graduated from Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduated from San Francisco State College with a B.S. degree and a Master's degree from the University of Maryland.
She joined the Army Nurse Corps February 10, 1957 and was stationed in Germany and Hawaii as well as in the United States. She retired as a Lt. Colonel on March 31, 1977. She taught pediatrics for the six years at Franklin Square Hospital following retirement.
She received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Flora was a member of the Col. John Streett Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society Southern Dames of America, John S. Murphy Post #7130 VFW, Delta, Pennsylvania, the American Legion Post #182, Whiteford, Maryland and Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church, Cardiff, Maryland.
Funeral services will be held at Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 11 AM .officiated by her pastor, Reverend Carletta Curley, Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be at Slate Ridge Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home, Monday, the 7th from 7:00 - 9:00 PM and on Tuesday one hour prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:00 AM.
She is survived by cousins, Louise Davis Ruff and daughter Nancy Ruff Reiter, Charles Gladden Davis, Katherine Streett Davis Scarborough, Kelly Louise Davis, Helen Richardson and daughter Mary Jane Gentry, Dorothy Richardson, Kay and Joseph M. Streett III and many other cousins and friends.
