SARAH EUGENIA ASBURY KENNEDY, age 82 years, died on January 7, 2012 in her home in Bel Air, MD after a lengthy illness.
Known as "Genie" to one and all, was born and raised in Delta, PA. The elder daughter of the late Kelley L. Asbury and Sarah Lincoln Stubbs Asbury, Genie spent much of her early childhood in the company of her beloved grandmother, Clarence Crawford Galbreath Stubbs and her grandfather, Harvey Stubbs. She was a 1947 graduate of the former Delta High School and continued her education at Russell Sage College where in 1951; she earned her B.S. Degree in Business Education. Genie married William Jackson, an engineer with the York Corporation, and lived in York, PA where her daughter Pam was born. The family traveled to Roanoke, VA when her husband was transferred and a son, Kelley and a daughter, Lorri were born. When the family lived in Albany, NY for a time, Genie attended graduate school at her Alma Mater, Russell Sage College before moving to Minnesota.
Once her children were grown and her marriage ended, Genie joined the Peace Corps in 1978 and served on the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent as a business teacher. Gene always spoke of her years in the Corps as an especially exciting and rewarding time. At the close of her term of service, Genie moved to Key West where she taught business subjects at a private school. One year later, she moved back to Delta and taught at the Job Corps Center in Bainbridge, MD.
Genie was able through her warm and empathetic personality, to establish mutual respect and understanding with her disadvantaged students. After the Job Corps Center closed, she moved to the west coast of Florida where she joined several childhood friends from the Delta area. There she met and married George Kennedy in 1988. After her husband's death in 1996, she moved to Minnesota to be near her children and grandchildren. In the year 2000, she became reacquainted with Jack Murphy, her distant cousin and childhood friend. Their acquaintance blossomed, and they decided to spend their remaining years as beloved companions.
After living in Baltimore, MD for 2 years, they moved to Bel Air to be closer to Genie's sister, Beverly and the community where they both grew up. Until Genie became ill in 2009, she and Jack enjoyed 9 years together, spending winters in Florida, traveling in the summers including a trip to Scotland, the land of their mutual ancestors, to celebrate Genie's 75th birthday.
