James Wilmer Compher, Jr., 91, passed away on August 10, 2026, as a summer rainstorm moved through the area—a fitting bookend to a life that began more than nine decades earlier during a massive winter snowstorm.

James was born on January 24, 1935, in Burkittsville, Maryland, during one of those snowstorms that becomes part of a family's story for generations. He was the son of the late James Wilmer Compher, Sr. and Arbilla Compher (nee Dasher).

Perhaps the greatest story of James' life was the love story he shared with his beloved wife, Marie Compher.

James and Marie were married on March 6, 1954, beginning a marriage that would span more than 72 years. Their story was especially remarkable because neither ever dated anyone else. They found one another early in life, chose one another, and continued choosing one another through more than seven decades of marriage, family, change, and countless memories.

Together, James and Marie built a family of which he was incredibly proud. James was the loving father of Pamela Kell and her husband, James; Dreama Stokes and her husband, Robert; Michael Compher and his wife, Barbara; and Joseph Compher and his wife, Brendalee.

His family continued to grow through the generations, blessing James with seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. His family stands as a lasting testament to the life and love that James and Marie built together.

Music was also an important part of James' life. He played bass and sang with The Country Legends, sharing his love of country music through both his voice and his instrument. The songs he played, the people he played alongside, and the memories created through music became another special part of a life well lived.

From a snowy January day in 1935 to a rainy August day in 2026, James' 91 years were filled with family, music, love, and a remarkable lifelong partnership. His was a life measured not simply in years, but in the generations that followed him, the memories he created, the music he shared, and the love story that began with Marie so many years ago.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Wagner-Elfner and Harkins Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 600 Main Street, Delta, Pennsylvania 17314, where a funeral service celebrating James' life will begin at 11:00 a.m.

A committal service and burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, 250 Chestnut Hill Road, York, Pennsylvania 17402. Those attending the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery.
