James L. Morris, 83, of Annapolis, MD, died at his residence on Monday, December 12, 2022. He was born in Baltimore, MD to his late parents James S. and Clara L. (Findley) Morris. James and his wife Judy (Krouse) Morris were married for 53 years at the time of his death.
James attended Kennard-Dale High School and was a graduate of Munich-American High School in Munich, Germany where in his senior year played for the basketball team and ran track. After high school graduation, he attended the University of Maryland in Munich and later graduated from Penn State University in 1966, where he played as a member of the Men's Basketball Team. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Bliss, in El Paso, TX. After honorable discharge and later in life, James was a member of and former Kommandant of "The Lost Patrol", a local veterans group that met weekly for lunch and special dinners.
James was an excellent educator and coach. His distinguished teaching career began at Arundel Junior High School, then moved to Arundel Senior High School and concluded at Broadneck High School. He taught Physical Education and Driver's Education along with coaching basketball and golf. He retired in 1998 having dedicated 31 years to the students of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools.
Follow retirement, James worked part-time for Maryland State Government in the Department of Legislative Services from 2000-2013 and also as a liquor inspector for Anne Arundel County and City of Annapolis. When not keeping busy with work, James enjoyed collecting sports memorabilia, watching and supporting the Orioles and Ravens, being a supporter of Penn State Athletics, walking his dogs in the morning and being known as the "Frog Man" for his large collection of frog art, antiques and collectibles.
James was also a student of history. He was passionate about local history, slate mining, and the Susquehanna River and Native American history focusing on the Susquehannock Tribe. He co-founded the Old Line Museum and was the co-author of "The River and The Ridge-300 Years of Local History (Peach Bottom Township and Delta, Pennsylvania, Cardiff and Whiteford, Maryland)".
In addition to his beloved spouse Judith, James is survived by three children, James Slade Morris, Michael Paul Morris and Rebecca (Andrew Fox) Morris-Fox. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Samuel Day Fox, Theodore James Fox and Emmett Robert Fox.
In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by one sister, Peggy Morris Stapleton and one brother, John M. Morris.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 11 am until 1 pm at Slateville Presbyterian Church, 308 Slateville Rd, Delta, PA. A funeral service will begin promptly at 1 pm at the church with Reverend Kenneth Osborne officiating. Burial will occur immediately following the funeral in the adjoining church cemetery.
Harkins Funeral Home, Inc., of Delta, PA has been entrusted with arrangements.
