He moved to Fawn Grove, bought a farm and established his dairy herd. He dispersed this herd in 1973 and used the time to get his pilot's license and enter into a partnership on a Cessna 182 airplane. In 1980, he went back into milking cows in the partnership of Fawn Meadow Holsteins.

He was a former member of the Fawn Township Planning Commission and a longtime member of the York County Solid Waste Authority where he had served as Assistant Treasurer and Chairman of the Operating Committee.
John's other interests besides farming and machinery included driving his stock car when he was younger, his Model A when he was older, refinishing furniture, talking politics and solving the world's problems with his coffee shop buddies. One of his proudest achievements was the stone fireplace and log room he added onto the home farm house.
