Obituary

JOSEPH FREDERICK ROGERS, SR., 88, of Darlington, MD, died on Saturday, August 28, 2021, in Union Hospital, Elkton, MD. Married for eight years, he was the beloved husband of Ina Mae McCardell-Rogers.

Born on September 15, 1932, in Quarryville, Lancaster County, PA, he was one of five children born to the late Irving John Rogers and Virginia (Moorehouse) Rogers and spent his adolescent years in Baltimore, MD. He bravely served in the US Army during the Korean War from March 1950 – March 1953. During his service, he received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Cluster, United Nations Service and Good Conduct medals, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He also survived time in North Korea on a mission and was given credit for saving a fellow soldier's life.

After discharge, he worked as a photographer at the Baltimore Sun and WBAL-TV station in Baltimore during the '60s with one of his highlights - an interview with then-President John F. Kennedy. After securing employment with General Motors, he worked as a millwright for over 30 years, retiring in 2001. He loved to restore Chevrolet cars in his spare time, and some of his favorites were the Corvair and Cavalier.

Joseph and his wife, Ina, enjoyed playing card games, going out to eat, attending the movie theater, and he often played solitaire on the computer. A brave soldier, dedicated husband, devoted father and grandfather, his kind spirit and love of country will be missed.

Theresa Motto and her husband, Nicholas; Joanne Markel and her husband, Brian; Virginia (Ginger) Rogers and her husband, Bob Hoffman and Joseph Frederick Rogers, Jr. and his wife, Brooke

His siblings-Gail Price, Rod Rogers and Bill Rogers and the late Marcia Rogers.

Three grandchildren-

Michele Moser, Gregory Calvert and Joseph Frederick Rogers, III; three great grandchildren- Alex Moser, Delilah Moser and Jackson Calvert.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 5th at 2 p.m. at the Rogers Home, 3328 Cedar Church Road, Darlington, MD. Harkins Funeral Home, Delta, PA has been entrusted with his arrangements.
