Obituary

Leslie “Gump” A. Smith of Airville, PA, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. 

Born in Delta, PA to the late William R. Smith and Lola (Pomraning) Smith. He was preceded in death by his siblings: J. Willis Smith, Eunice (Smith) Chamberlain; William Smith and Joyce (Smith) Shildt. 

Gump grew up with a strong work ethic and a deep sense of duty. After attending Lower Chanceford High School, he proudly served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1961, where he developed lifelong friendships and a steadfast commitment to service. Following his military service, Gump built a successful career as a boilermaker/welder. He was a member of Boilermakers Local Lodge 13 where he was known for his craftsmanship, integrity, and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need. His work can still be seen in places such as the Norman Wood Bridge, Peach Bottom Power Station, Eddystone Station, Brunner’s Island Station or York Trash to Steam, to name a few. Each project being a testament to his dedication and skill. 

Beyond his trade, Gump was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge 663, he embodied the values of integrity, brotherhood, and charity. He enjoyed the fellowship of his Masonic brothers and took considerable pride in supporting charitable causes close to his heart. Also, throughout his lifetime he had many hobbies. Gump spent a lot of time in the great outdoors where he tremendously enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved playing softball and tinkering in his woodshop.

 Gump will be remembered for his profound sense of humor, strong handshake, warm smile, and unwavering love for his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Marion (Parks) Smith; his children: Terry (Karene) Smith, Tamre (Joe) Hurt, and Rebecca (Mike) Schwartz; grandchildren: Rachel McKinstry, Mariah Smith, Kasey Smith, Hayley Hurt, Alex Hurt, Brittany Schwartz, Michael Schwartz Jr, Grant Schwartz, and Hayden Schwartz; 9 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. 

A graveside service by Rev. James Shuler will be held on May 23, 2026, 11:00am at Salem Church of Delta (5042 Delta Rd, Delta, PA), with both military and masonic honors.
