Louise Carolyn Hess Grier

June 4, 1924-August 29, 2024

Louise was born on June 4, 1924, at home, on the family farm in Taneytown, MD. Her parents were Wilbert N. and Lucy Marie Hess.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Louise Grier Standiford; grandson, Samuel Standiford and his wife Lara, their son Rylan; and granddaughter Hannah Marie Farmer and her husband Chris Farmer. Louise's husband, John W. Grier, predeceased her in 2004.

Louise graduated from Taneytown High School in 1941 and attended two years at Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD. She then attended Thompson's Business School in York, PA. She worked with the State Extension Service, first in Westminster, then at College Park, MD. Louise also worked with the Extension Service in Litchfield, CT. She then returned to Maryland, working in Bel Air.

John and Louise were married on February 25, 1951. They had two children, David and Carolyn. David died in 1973. Louise became an essential part of the nursery business that John and she built and ran for 44 years. For 18 of those years, Louise also ran a part-time typing and copy business at home.

Louise was a great lover of music. She played the piano and cello, sang in various choral groups through high school and throughout her life in Connecticut, Washington, DC, and Bel Air, and with the church choir at Highland Presbyterian Church, where she and John were active in various roles.

In later years, Louise was active in AARP, enjoying travel and trips with new friends. Her favorite activities were reading and mowing. She remained sharp and active to the end of her 100 years.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
