MARCELLENE McCLUNG WHARTON, age 97 years, of York, PA and formerly of Pylesville, MD died at 8:55 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at her residence at Country Meadows of Leader Heights. She was the wife of John W. Wharton who died on December 5, 1978.

Mrs. Wharton was born in Norrisville, MD on August 22, 1913, a daughter of the late Joseph Samuel and Mary Jordan (Liggitt) McClung. She was a 1931 graduate of Jarrettsville High School. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Western Maryland College in 1935 and spent her entire 40 year teaching career with Harford County Public Schools, teaching at both Dublin High School and North Harford High School.

She was a longtime member of the Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church, Cardiff, MD.

Mrs. Wharton is survived by:

One niece: Mary Beth Whiteford Scott and her husband Daniel of Jarrettsville, MD

Two great nephews: William Gerald Scott and Michael John Scott

One great great niece: Autumn Isabel Scott

She is also survived by a large extended family.

Mrs. Wharton was preceded in death by her sister, Isabel McClung Whiteford who died in January 2007.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1630 Chestnut Street, Whiteford (Cardiff), MD 21160.

Reverend Linda J. Post, pastor of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, Madonna, MD will officiate.

Interment will be in Slate Ridge Cemetery, Delta, PA.

Friends may call at the Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, PA on Monday, July 18 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
