RICHARD STEEL FLEISCHMANN, 84 of Delta, PA, died on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 in Mt. Joy, PA. He was a son of the late Richard S. and Margaret (Henry) Fleischmann and was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 10, 1937. Richard spent most of his childhood in Elkton, MD graduating from Elkton High School in 1955. Continuing his education, he received a degree in chemical engineering from Carnegie Tech, now known as Carnegie Mellon University in 1959. His work was in the field of electrical production, employed over 30 years for PECO now Exelon. Most of his career was at the Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Plant near Delta, PA. He held many positions there, including plant superintendent.
Richard and his beloved wife of 50 years, Betsy, a retired Harford County, MD school teacher, lived on their 32 acre farm with its own landing strip. He became a licensed small plane pilot, purchased a Taylorcraft airplane and enjoyed taking friends and relatives for rides, especially his children.
Richard was quite the fixer-upper and often helped relatives and friends repair plumbing and electrical problems. In the 1970's, before PCs became readily available, he built two personal computers for his own use. Richard became quite the computer expert, wrote his own programs and enjoyed using modern computers. He helped both children and adults learn how to use their own computers.
Richard loved to read, solve crossword puzzles (always had a couple in his pocket), tinker in his workshop and enjoyed listening to classical music. He and Betsy had season tickets to the Baltimore Opera at The Lyric and enjoyed attending Baltimore Symphony concerts.
Richard and his wife loved to travel. They traveled to many European countries, most of the United States including Alaska, the Bahamas, Canada and to the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, sailing the latter with his brother and his wife for weeks at a time. Richard enjoyed life immensely.
Richard enjoyed along with his wife, volunteering in the Delta Community. They especially liked delivering Meals-on-Wheels for almost 20 years in the Delta-Fawn Grove area.
Along with his wife, Betsy, he is survived by children from a previous marriage to Roberta Jackson- his daughter, Kim M. Fleischmann of Bel Air MD and his son, Todd E. Fleischmann and his wife, Diana of Delta, PA; his brother, Thomas R. Fleischmann and his wife, Phyllis of Willow Valley, Lancaster, PA and many loving nieces and nephews.
Richard was also appreciative of all of the excellent care his family, doctors and nurses gave to him. The loving care he received from hospice in the final weeks of his life was wonderful.
