Obituary

Ronald H. Roberts, age 80, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Stella Maris Hospice Center. Ronald was born in Cardiff, MD, in 1944 to his late parents, John J. and Mary A. (Wise) Roberts. He was the second oldest of six children.

After graduation at seventeen from North Harford High School in 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea in the Pacific as a member of the Navy's Seventh Fleet. Upon his release from active duty, he accepted a position at the former Bainbridge Naval Training Center and worked there until the base closure in 1975. He then accepted a position with the Social Security Administration. During his long career with the federal government, he also held positions with the U.S. Army and the Defense Investigative Service as a computer programmer/systems analyst. He retired in 2002 with forty years of federal service. Then, at the urging of a friend, he reentered the work force as a bus driver for Whitcraft Bus Company and drove a school bus for the next seventeen years, finally retiring for good in June 2019.

He married his wife Darlene in 1973 and they celebrated 50 years of marriage in July 2023. Ron and Darlene were loving parents to William (Skip) and Rebecca (Becky). Later, they became loving grandparents to Megan, Emily, Mason and Gavin.

In addition to his beloved Darlene, children and grandchildren, Ron is survived by two sisters: Mary Lou Kovalik, of New Jersey and Carolyn S. Trenque, of California and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents, his brother, Jon H. (Jack) Roberts, his sisters, Margaret M. Smith and Patricia E (Patty) Burk and his nephew, Jeffrey J. (Jeff) Roberts.

Ron enjoyed singing and was a life member of Rehoboth Welsh Choir as well as a member of the North American Welsh Choir. He traveled on tours at various times with both choirs as has sung at concerts in Canada, Wales, Argentina, New Zealand and throughout the United States. He was also a member of the U.S.S. Coral Sea Association, Slate Ridge Post 182 American Legion and Rehoboth Welsh Church in Delta, PA.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 at Harkins Funeral Home, Inc., 600 Main Street, Delta, PA. A funeral service will be held at Noon on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, in the chapel of the funeral home, with Rev. Richard Price Baskwill, of Rehoboth Welsh Church, officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service in Highview Memorial Gardens, Fallston, MD. Pallbearers will be: Allen (Mac) Lloyd, Gregory Beattie, Matthew Mercer, William Luzetsky, Jr., Mason Mercer, John Meadowcroft and Steve Rose.

Military honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorial contributions are made to: Rehoboth Welsh Church, 1029 Atom Road, Delta, PA 17314, or, Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital, Office of Development, 750 East Pratt Street, Suite 1700, Baltimore, MD. 21202.
