Ruth Brooks Mitchell, affectionately known as "Grandmother" of Glade Valley, North Carolina died on Saturday, June 23, 2012. She was 78 years old.

Ruth moved to Maryland at the age of 18 with her beloved twin sister, Ruby and settled in Havre de Grace, Maryland. She married the late Harvey Mitchell and worked as a payroll clerk for former Bata Shoe Company until her retirement. However, it was her family life, not her work life which defined her. Ruth knew no greater joy than rocking a child in her arms and spent many happy hours wiping tears, changing diapers and giving both hugs and advice in equal measure.

Ruth is survived by

Her children: Barry Mitchell and his wife Cathy, Joseph Mitchell and his wife Cindy, and Judith Schiavi and her husband Larry

Her grandchildren: Amanda Bennett and her husband, Dale, Joseph Mitchell, Jr., Jennifer Eberwein and her husband, Kevin, and Emily Schiavi

Her great grandchildren: Taylor Bennett and James Eberwein.

Her sisters: Ruby Himmer, Mabel McKnight, Elsie Moore, Louise Smith, Ellen Brooks and brother, Bobby Brooks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Mitchell, her sister, Roxie Royall and her brothers Clifford Brooks and Roy Brooks.

It was Grandmother's wish to return "home" to her mountains to be buried. Visitation will be held at the Mountain View Regular Baptist Church, 3106 Mountain View Road, Sparta, North Carolina from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Wednesday June 27th, with the service immediately following. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
