Obituary

Shirley Mildred Palmer Blackistone Jones died peacefully at her beloved home in Pompano Beach, Florida on June 23, 2008. She was born May 10, 1916 in Richmond, Virginia. She leaves behind her daughter, Barbara Ann Blackistone Younker and son-in-law Michael E. Younker, of La Plata, Maryland; grandsons Matthew W. Johnson of Cumming, Georgia and Benjamin D. Johnson of La Plata, Maryland and sister, Betty Lou Terlinden of S. Pasadena, California and niece Dig Stevenson of Papillion, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh S. Palmer, her mother Mildred Davis Palmer and her two beloved husbands, John Dent Blackistone and Herbert D. Jones. She also left behind many friends.

Shirley lived life to the fullest. She especially loved her family and spend many hours of fun shopping, entertaining, reading, and doing crafts. Shirley was a great organizer, volunteering many happy hours helping anywhere her talents were needed. These included the 1st Presbyterian Church; the Ladies Auxiliary at Imperial Point Hospital and Century Plaza Condominium all in Pompano Beach, Florida. She held many officer positions in each of these organizations and leaving her mark on each person she met and place where she worked or volunteered.

Shirley retired in 1973 from Federal Service in Washington, D.C. with over 26 years of service. These included a variety of positions at the National Science Foundation, Office of Scientific Research and Development, U.S. House of Representatives, the Republican Congressional Committee and Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to any Hospice or local Humane Society.

Due to the summer heat, a brief committal service will be held in Slateville Presbyterian Church, 308 Slateville Road, Delta, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 26th at 1:00 PM before proceeding to the inurnment at the graveside.
