How to PLan a Celebration of Life
It’s really a process of asking and answering questions. Take time to sit down with other family members, once or even several times, to explore celebration of life ideas that naturally emerge as you work through these questions:
- Who will be invited? The number of guests helps shape the where, when, and how of your celebration of life. Begin by writing down everyone who might want to attend, knowing you can add names as ideas evolve.
- Where and when should the event take place? This is where creativity meets practical considerations. Think about schedules, travel needs, and availability, and be sure to check in with out-of-town family and friends before finalizing details.
- Who will guide the event? If your loved one was religious, you may choose a pastor or minister. Many families today also select a non-denominational celebrant to lead and coordinate the celebration of life.
- Who would like to speak? Some family members or friends may openly express a desire to share memories, while others may appreciate being invited to do so. Choose those who shared a close connection with your loved one and have something meaningful to offer.
- What group activities feel appropriate? This is an opportunity to reflect on what your loved one enjoyed most in life and to create moments where guests can share memories, laughter, and even tears together.
- What food or beverages will be served? Selections may reflect the theme of the celebration or your loved one’s favorite foods. Some families even choose a potluck-style gathering, where guests contribute items in a shared spirit of remembrance.
- What readings or music should be included? Music often plays a powerful role in honoring a life, but it isn’t right for everyone. Readings, spiritual selections, or meaningful passages from literature can be equally fitting.
- What aspects of your loved one’s life do you want to share? Rather than covering every detail, focus on stories or moments that capture their true spirit and character.
- What decorations will you include? Some families center the event around a tribute video, while others create a memory table with photographs and personal keepsakes.
