Life Story for Dorothy Diehl Cox

Dorothy Diehl Cox
Dorothy Diehl Cox died Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the home of Joan Heaps in Whiteford, Md. She was 94. She lived for more than sixty years on Main Street in Cardiff where she operated “Dot’s Beauty Shop” in her home. She loved her work and treasured the many friendships she formed with her customers, so much so, that she put off her “retirement” until she was well into her 70’s.

Dorothy, or as she was also known “Dot” or “Dottie”, was born on April 10, 1919 on her family’s farm in Winterstown, PA, the middle child and the only daughter of the late Ervin P. and Florence L. Diehl. After her graduation from high school, she studied cosmetology and was certified as a licensed beautician. Her first job was at a salon in Stewartstown, Pa, but after a few years, she followed her dream to own and operate her own beauty shop, which she did for more than six decades.

She was an active member of Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church, which she joined in 1957. Over more than fifty years, she served frequently in leadership roles, as a Deacon, a member of the Session, and as President/moderator of the women’s association. She was also a member of the Friends of the Library for many years.

Dorothy loved to cook, and she loved her gardens. She shared a love of travel with her dear friends Joan Heaps and the late Eleanor Thompson, with whom she enjoyed many glorious trips.

She is survived by her daughter, Merrilee Cox, her husband, Tom Flammia of Silver Spring, Md, and two grandchildren, Karen Flammia Harriman and her husband, Troy Harriman of West Chicago, Il, and Steven Flammia of Sydney, Australia.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Dorothy Cox will be held on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church in Cardiff, Md. At 2:00 pm. Visitation with the family will take place in the Gathering Room in the back of the church beginning at 1:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to make a donation to the Stella Maris Hospice Home Care Program, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium, Md. 21093, or to another hospice program of your choice.
