Obituary for Jean E. Jones

Jean E.  Jones
JEAN E. JONES, age 92 years, of Waynesburg, PA and formerly of Whiteford, MD died on Friday, August 15, 2014 at Washington Hospital in Washington, PA. She was the wife of Hugh P. “Babe” Jones who died on November 30, 1996.

Born in Whiteford, MD on July 24, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Ruth (Norris) Sliver. A lifetime Whiteford resident, she moved to Rolling Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation in Waynesburg in March of 2013.

From 1957 – 1965, Mrs. Jones worked in the cafeteria of the former Slate Ridge Elementary School in Cardiff, MD and from 1965 – 1978, she was employed at various sewing factories in both Harford and York counties. An avid reader, Mrs. Jones enjoyed playing cards and dominoes and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Knitting was a favorite pastime as was following the Baltimore Orioles. Mrs. Jones loved to send cards and was known for remembering the special days of her friends and family. While a resident of Rolling Meadows, she enjoyed playing bingo, listening to the visiting musical groups and time spent with her roommate and good friend, Mary Neligh.
A longtime member of the former Cambria U.M. Church in Whiteford, she had served as treasurer and was active in the WSCS. Her membership transferred to the Mt. Vernon U.M. Church in Whiteford where she also held the office of treasurer.

Mrs. Jones is survived by:

Two sons
H. Eugene Jones and his wife, Karen of Street, MD
Charles M. Jones and his wife, Terry of Rogersville, PA

Four grandchildren
Melissa Woods, Michael Jones, Bradley Ashburn and Matthew Jones.

She is also survived by six great grandchildren
Cheyenne Klein, Mia Jones, Zoe Jones, Matthew Klein, Billy Woods and Zach Woods.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her stepmother, Fannie (Norris) Sliver and her siblings, Edward Sliver and Mary Sliver.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main Street, Delta, PA.

Officiating will be Rev. Melissa A. McDade.

Interment will be in Slate Ridge Cemetery, Delta.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mt. Vernon U.M. Church, 1510 Deep Run Rd., Whiteford, MD 21160 or Whiteford Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 222, Whiteford, MD 21160.

The family is planning to hold a memorial service in the Waynesburg area at a date to be determined. Due notice will be given.
