ROGER PAUL AKERS, age 68 years of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Harford County, MD, died on Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida in Jacksonville. He was the husband of Barbara Ann (Roberts) Akers with whom he had shared over 34 years of marriage.
Born in Abingdon, MD, he was the son of the late Walter Bruce and Condie Catherine (Newman) Akers. A 1963 graduate of North Harford High School in Pylesville, MD, he worked for the next 10 years in Newark, DE for the Chrysler Corp. In 1975, Roger enlisted in the United States Navy where he would receive his degree from the Southeast Institute of Culinary Arts. While in the Navy, he served on:
USS Mobile Bay with home port in San Diego, CA – a cargo ship
USS Gallery with homeport in May Port, FL – a guided missile frigate
USS Independence with homeport in Norfolk, VA – an aircraft carrier
Roger served in Kuwait in 1990 and his final assignment was in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. As a First Class Petty Officer, he retired with 20 years of service to his country in 1995. Following the Navy, Roger was a chef for the Diocese of St. Augustine in Florida where he was currently employed.
He was a proud member of the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Georgia Louise Akers and a brother, Gregory Akers.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Prince of Peace Baptist Church, 1110 Old Fallston Road, Fallston, MD 21047 with Pastor Paul Cole officiating.
Interment will be in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, MD.
Visitations will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 2nd at the Harkins Funeral Home, 600 Main St., Delta, PA and also from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3rd at the church.
